This day is the 23rd day of June, 2022. One of the ways I start out this post is to periodically remind you that you have superpowers. Most of us forget that we have the power to make or ruin another person’s day. I can be rude to someone I know or a total stranger and push them toward a state of unhappiness. I have that power. Or, I can be kind, polite, and complementary and push them toward happiness. It’s totally up to me. Use your superpower wisely because what the vibrations you send out come back to you. It’s called Karma. June 23rd is Let It Go Day, National Hydration Day, National Pecan Sandies Day, Pink Flamingo Day, Public Service Day, and Detroit Style Pizza Day. Now to the historical footnotes about this day. In 1713 the French residents of Acadia were given one year to declare allegiance to Britain or leave Nova Scotia. Most didn’t and they ended up in Louisiana. On this day in 1794 Russian Empress Catherine the Great grated Jews permission to settle in Kiev. This is one of the rare positive footnotes about the Jews during this time. Jumping ahead to 1938 on this day Marineland opened near St. Augustine Florida. It was billed as “the world’s first oceanarium”. It’s still in business today. This is the day in 1947 that President Truman’s veto of the Taft-Hartley Act was overridden by Congress. The Taft-Hartley Act restricted the activities and power of labor unions. On this day in 1995 Jonas Salk died. He developed the polio vaccine and didn’t patent it. He found the cure for the most feared disease in the world and decided not to make millions from it. Jonas said, “the most important question we must ask ourselves is, ‘Are we being good ancestors?” At least for Dr. Salk, the answer is yes. I’ll end with a quote from Robert Hunter who was a poet and a lyricist who worked with the Grateful Dead. Robert said, “Ain’t nobody messin’ with you but you.” He’s got a point. Abide.
