We passed the 06.10.2022 mile post at midnight. We’ve got a few storm clouds ahead with some rain in the forecast. Good for the lawns. All things considered, another good day to be alive. June 10th is Alcoholics Anonymous Founder’s Day, Ballpoint Pen Day, National Black Cow Day, National Herb and Spice Day, National Iced Tea Day, and National Marriage Day. If none of these floats your boat, June is National Turkey Month. I have no idea why. Now some history: In 1692 on this day the first victim of the Salem Witch trials, Bridget Bishop, was hanged in Massachusetts. This is the day in 1752 that Ben Franklin tested the lightning conductor with his kite-flying experiment. In 1793 on this day the 1st public zoo opened in Paris. In 1845 on this day the funeral for Andrew Jackson at his home, The Hermitage in Tennessee. As the sermon was beginning, Jackson’s pet parrot “Poll” started swearing so loudly that it had to be removed from the house. In 1908 on this day the Australian Parliament passed the Invalid and Old Age Pensions Act which provided pensions to people when they turned 65. It didn’t apply to the aboriginals. This day in the 1940s are filled with Nazi atrocities. Enough history. Now for a few quotes: Ray Charles died on this day in 2004. Ray said, “Affluence separates people. Poverty knits ‘em together. You got some sugar, and I don’t; I borrow some of yours. Next month you might not have any flour; well, I’ll give you some of mine.” The great hockey player Gordie Howe died in 2016. Gordie said, “You can always get someone to do your thinking for you.” I agree with him. The Western author, Louis L’Amour died in 1988. He said, “The trail is the thing, not the end of the trail. Travel too fast, and you miss all you are traveling for.” Seems like a good place to end. Abide.
