May 26, 2022. It’s that time of the day when I do my best to put myself in a good frame of mind so that I can enjoy the remainder of the day. That’s probably the real reason I get up almost every morning and write this post. If I were to jump right in a read the news, it would take me to a dark place. I’m grateful for what I have and content to be where I’m at. Life’s been good to me so far. Today is National Blueberry Cheesecake Day, National Cherry Dessert Day, Paper Airplane Day. World Lindy Hop Day, and World Redhead Day. I celebrate blueberries every day. Now let’s climb on board the way back machine and see what happened on this day. On this day in 1637 the 1st battle of Pequot War in Connecticut took place when 500 Pequot Native Americans were killed by Colonial forces. In 1647 Alse Young became the first person executed as a witch in the American colonies, when she was hanged in Hartford, Connecticut. Not much information of her trial has been retained but it is thought that she was blamed for the Influenza. There were probably no Jews available to blame. On this day in 1868 US President Andrew Johnson avoided impeachment by 1 vote. This is a big footnote. President Johnson was determined to put Lincoln’s plan of reconstruction that would be lenient toward the defeated South as it rejoined the Union. Congress wanted military governments set up and the punishment of the South. Had President Johnson been impeached, we would have a different America. Today we will benefit from the wisdom of Martin Heidegger who was a German philosopher who died in 1976. Martin said, “How one encounters reality is a choice.” It took me 70 years to realize this fact. Next is the television personality, Art Linkletter who passed in 2010 at the age of 97. Art said, “Just smiling goes a long way toward making you feel better about life. And when you feel better able life, your life is better.” I’ll end this with a quote from Jak Vance who was a science fiction writer who passed in 2013 at the age of 96. Jack suggested “While we are alive we should sit among colored lights and taste good wines and discuss our adventures in far places; when we are dead, the opportunity is past.” Sounds like a plan. Abide.
