May 24th, 2022. So far, it’s a good day. Too early to tell much about it but the weather forecast is good and we have a fundraiser scheduled at Cody’s in Brownwood. That means an afternoon filled with friends, food, alcohol and music. A nice way to live this Tuesday. May 24th has a short list of celebratory events. It’s Asparagus Day, Brother’s Day, International Tiara Day, National Escargot Day and Scavenger Hunt Day. Since I’ve got two great brothers, that’s my pick for today. Now to the history of this day. On this day in 1755 the smuggler Loouis Mandrin, who was considered to be the French Robin Hood, was sentenced to be broken on the wheel. This was a medieval form of torture and execution that broke the bones of the victim. Wow. This is the day the Irish Rebellion of 1798 led by the United Irishmen against British rule began. This day in 1830 is when “Mary Had A Little Lamb” by Sarah Josepha Hale was first published. On this day in 1833 the Brooklyn Bridge opened. In 1899 on this day the first auto repair shop opened in Boston. Finally, in 1951 racial segregation in Washington, D.C. restaurants was ruled illegal. Now lets see what quotes we can find from important dead people. John Foster Dulles was Ike’s Secretary of State. John died in 1959. He said, “The measure of success is not whether you have a tough problem to deal with, but whether it is the same problem you had last year.” Next is Old Tom Morris who was called the Grand Old Man of Scottish golf. He passed in 1908. Tom said, “Socrates had a student named Plato, Plato had a student named Aristotle and Aristotle had a student named Alexander the Great.” The last dead person is Tanith Lee who was a British writer who died in 2015 at the age of 67. Tanith said, “If I ever get to 100, I’d want to be filled with wonder and wild, adolescent, wide -eyed interest in newness. So, let’s keep the flame burning.” Tanith didn’t get anywhere close to 100. Hope I do. Abide.
