It is now May 12, 2022. I hope you’re having a good day. So far, I am. Somedays it’s hard to ignore the chaos that surrounds us. Today is one of those days for me. I’ll be thinking about ice cream a lot today. It’s my technique to avoid negative thinking. Today is International Nurses’ Day, Odometer Day, Limerick Day and National Nutty Fudge Day. It’s a short list but I think we can all agree that fudge is a good thing. Now to history: this happens to be the day in 1777 that the first Ice Cream advertisement was published. On this day in 1871 segregated street cars were integrated in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1933 the Federal Emergency Relief Administration and the Agricultural Adjustment Administration were formed to help the needy and farmers. This was part of FDR’s effort to lift us out of the Great Depression. In 1942 a Nazi U-boat sunk an American cargo ship at mouth of Mississippi River. Finally, on this day in 1963 Bob Dylan walked off the “Ed Sullivan Show” set. He wasn’t famous yet and this would have been a jump start to his career, but the censors rejected the song he was going to play, “Talkin’ John Birch Paranoid Blues” and he walked out. This is George Carlin’s birthday. He’s one of my favorite philosophers. Here are some of his observations: “Think of how stupid the average person is and realize half of them are stupider than that.” “Don’t just teach your children to read. Teach them to question what they read. Teach them to question everything.” “I like Florida. Everything is in the 80s. The temperatures, the ages and the IQ’s.” I’ll wrap us today with “Those who dance are considered insane by those who cannot hear the music.” I do love sarcasm. Abide.
