Good morning. This is my post for April 29, 2022. Last Saturday I had a Blue Cheese wedge salad for lunch with a complimentary side of E. coli. I started paying for it a few hours later. It took the wind out of my sales since then but I’m close to being back to my old self. I’m well enough to want to sit down and write this post at least. This is National Peace Rose Day, International Dance Day, Zipper Day, World Stationery Day, Poem in Your Pocket, Shrimp Scampi Day and National Hairball Awareness Day (?). Now to the history of this day. This is the day in 1707 that the English and Scottish parliaments accepted the Act of Union which created the United Kingdom of Great Britain. On this day in 1715 English Astronomer John Flamsteed observed Uranus for the 6th time, and yes, I’m going to post any footnote with “Uranus” in it. In 1905 on this day, 2″ rain fell in 10 mins in Taylor, Texas. On this day in 1945 the US Army liberated 31,601 people from the Dachau Nazi concentration camp. Finally, on this day in 1975 the US began evacuating citizens from Saigon in Operation Frequent Wind because of the advancing North Vietnamese forces. On this day let’s stop at the grave of John Kenneth Galbraith who was an economist, diplomat and intellectual. His observations are insightful. “Faced with the choice between changing one’s mind and proving that there is no need to do so, almost everyone gets busy on the proof.” “No solution (to poverty) is so effective as providing income to the poor. Weather in the form of food, housing, health services, education or money, income is an excellent antidote for deprivation.” “This is a world inhabited not by people who have to be persuaded to believe but by people who want an excuse to believe. I’ll wrap up with this gem: “More die in the United States of too much food than of too little.” If you’ve got a few minutes to waste, search on John and read his quotes. You’ll end up being a little smarter for the investment. Abide.
