Sticking with music, and in the words of Joe Walsh, “Live’s been good to me so far.” Am I lucky? Yes, I am. Am I grateful? Yes, I am. Today is Jenkin’s Ear Day, Appomattox Day, National Chicken Little Awareness Day, National Chinese Almond Cookie Day, National Name Yourself Day, Winston Churchill Day and my pick from this list, National Gin and Tonic Day. A little explanation of Jenkin’s Ear Day. Jenkins was the Captain of an English ship that was boarded by Spanish Coast Guard in 1731m and decided to cut off his ear. England and Spain went to war over the incident. On this day in 1865, General Robert E. Lee and 26,765 troops surrendered at Appomattox Court House which is why this is Appomattox Day. In 1872 Samuel R Percy patented dried milk on this day. On this day in 1947 tornadoes hit West Texas and Oklahoma killing 169 and injuring 1,300. In 1950 Bob Hope made his 1st TV appearance. Now let’s take a stroll through the graveyard. First stop is Frank Lloyd Wright who died in 1959 and said, “The longer I live the more beautiful life becomes.” I agree with Frank. Next is Dante Gabriel Rossetti who was a poet that died in 1882 who said, “It is beautiful, the world, and life itself. I am glad I have lived.” The last grave for today is Helene Hanff who was an author that died in 1997.
