We’ve slid quietly into the time/space of April 6th, 2022. Another unique, once in my lifetime day awaits, just like all the others. By writing this post I remind myself not to take it for granted and be grateful for the opportunity to live it. There’s lots of interesting choices for celebrations today. It’s Army Day, Fresh Tomato Day, National Caramel Popcorn Day, National Tartan Day, National Twinkie Day, Jump Over Things Day, Plan Your Epitaph Day, and New Beer’s Eve which is the day before beer could once again be legally sold on April 7, 1933. Now some history of today. There aren’t a lot of interesting footnotes for this date. In 1327 Italian poet Petrarch 1st set his eyes on his beloved Laura. Why bring this up? Well, it turns out that Petrarch is a contemporary of Shakespeare, who was a big deal at the time. Laura, whoever she was, became his obsession and he wrote 366 poems about her. He developed the Sonnet style of poetry. It was this day in 1917 that the US declared war on Germany and entered World War I. On this day in 1935 H Levitt made 499 basketball free throws, missed one and made 371 more. In 1938 on this day Teflon was invented. This is the day that Mickey Rooney died in 2014 at the age of 94. He said, “I don’t regret anything I’ve ever done. I only wish I could have done more.” I’m going to end this post with some words of wisdom from Wilma Mankiller who the Chief of the Western Cherokee Nation who died on this date in 2014. Wilma said, “If you argue with a fool, someone passing by will not be able to tell who is the fool and who is not” and “Take care how you place your moccasins upon the Earth, step with care, for the faces of the future generations are looking up from the Earth waiting for their turn for life.” I think I’ll stop now. Abide.
