My calendar says it’s February 28, 2022. That means Spring is here. For those of you who don’t have palm trees growing in your yard, you get to wait for March 20th. The long sleeve t-shirts and jeans can be stored away in the closet for until December comes again. Oscar Wilde said, “Conversation about the weather is the last refuge of the unimaginative” and therefore, I’ll move on. This day is designated as National Chocolate Soufflé Day, National Sleeping in Public Day, National Tooth Fairy Day. Floral Design Day, Car Keys and Small Change Day and National Science Day. Now to some historical footnotes: On this day in 1646, Roger Scott of Lynn, Massachusetts, was found guilty of sleeping in church and sentenced to a public whipping as punishment. On this day in 1704 Indians attacked Deerfield Massachusetts killing 40 people and kidnapping 100. In 1859 the Arkansas legislature required free blacks to choose exile or become sales again. Wow. Think about that one for a few minutes. In 1917 on this day the AP reported that Mexico was going to align with Germany if the US entered WWI. That would have resulted in a war between the US and Mexico. Germany tried to talk Mexico into getting into WWI and if they won, Mexico would get back Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. Today I’m going to give you several quotes from the author Henry James. His life ended on this day in 1916 at the age of 72. Henry said, “Do not mind anything that anyone tells you about anyone else. Judge everyone and everything for yourself,” “It’s time to start living the life you’ve imagined,” and “Until you try, you don’t know what you can’t do.” I’ll wrap up this post with a quote from the radio broadcaster Paul Harvey who died in 2005 at the age of 90. Paul said, “In times like these, it helps to recall that there have always been times like these.” Abide.
