Winnie the Pooh: “What day is it?” Piglet: “It’s today, January 18, 2022, my favorite day.” Today is always Piglet’s favorite day. A.A. Milne, who wrote the Winnie the Pooh books is one of my favorite philosophers. More about them later. Today is Winnie the Pooh Day, Maintenance Day, National Gourmet Coffee Day, Thesaurus Day, Rid the World of Fad Diet And Gimmicks Day and National Peking Duck Day. Now to what happened on this date: In 1733 America’s 1st polar bear exhibition was held in Boston. In 1788 the first ships carrying 736 convicts from England arrived in Botany Bay to establish Australia’s penal colony. In 1896 the 1st demonstration of an X-ray machine in US was held in New York City. In 1943 the government banned sliced bread to be sold to reduce bakery demand for metal parts. This was because the metal was needed for WWII. Finally, on this date in 1973 was John Cleese’s final episode on “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” on BBC TV. Monty Python was one of my favorites. I love the dry British humor. This is A. A. Milne’s birthday (1882) so I’ll end this post with some words of advice from Winnie and his friends. Piglet said, “The things that make me different are the things that make me, me.” Eeyore said, “A little consideration, a little thought for others, makes all the difference.” I’ll wrap it up with a couple from Winnie: “Life is a journey to be experienced, not a problem to be solved” and “When life throws you a rainy day, play in the puddles” Excellent advice if you ask me. Abide.
