November 1st, 2021. This is the month we celebrate the holiday of Thanksgiving. As you know, my theory is that the state of happiness starts with being grateful for what you have. That’s why I end each post with “Abide”. It’s nice to have one of our holidays devoted to that spirit. The turkey dinner with family and friends is still weeks away so we should look at what we can celebrate on this day: It’s All Saints Day, Give Up Your Shoulds Day, National Cinnamon Day, National Calzone Day, National Vinegar Day, World Vegan Day and National Deep Fried Clams Day. Now to the history of this day. In 1348 the Black Death reached London on or about this date. This plague killed between 75 and 100 million people. So far, the death count from Covid is around 5 million. In 1512 on this day, Michelangelo’s paintings on ceiling of Sistine Chapel in the Vatican were first exhibited. This is the day in 1800 that John Adams became the first US President to live in the White House. In 1955 a time bomb aboard a United plane exploded killing 44 passengers and crew over Longmont, Colorado. The bomb was planted by Jack Graham to kill his mother and get her life insurance. He went to the gas chamber in 1957. This is the day that Dale Carnegie died. In my mind, he is the greatest salesman that ever lived. Anyone in business who has not read his book “How to win friends and influence people” isn’t as successful as they could be. I’ll end this post with one quote from Dale: “Remember, happiness doesn’t depend upon who you are or what you have; it depends solely upon what you think. So, start each day by thinking of all the things you have to be thankful for. Your future will depend very largely on the thoughts you think today. So, think thoughts of hope and confidence and love and success.” Abide
