October 13th, 2021. I woke up this morning remembering the guard rails I used to guide my actions during my career (Purchasing) and my 10 years as an elected politician (local). These 2 questions are what I used to decide what I should do. 1. If what I’m about to do were done to me, would I think it was reasonable, fair, and just? and 2. If what I’m about to do were published in my local paper, would I be embarrassed? Those 2 questions kept me out of trouble, were the foundation of my reputation and allowed me to sleep like a baby every night. Today is Good Samaritan Day, International Plain Language Day, National M&M Day, National Yorkshire Pudding Day (yum), Silly Sayings Day, Treat Your Self Day and for all you ladies, National No Bra Day. Now to our short review of historical events: On this day in 1282 Nichiren, founder of the Nichiren School of Buddhism assumed room temperature. I bring up this obscure fact to give you one of his quotes: “Suffer what there is to suffer. Enjoy what there is to enjoy. Regard both suffering and joy to be facts of life”. Yet another way to define “Abide”. This is the day in 1792 the “Old Farmer’s Almanac” was 1st published. On the same day the foundation for the White House was laid. Today is Lenny Bruce’s birthday. I’m a fan of his edgy humor. Lenny said, “Wouldn’t it be nice if all the people who are lonesome could live in one big dormitory, sleep inn beds next to each other talk, laugh, and keep the lights on as long as they wont to?” Since I’ve already mentioned that Nichiren died on this day, I’ll end this post with a couple of his quotes: “Whether one has wealth or not, no treasure exceeds the one called life.” “If you light a lantern for another, it will also brighten your way.” Abide.
