It’s the 28th day of September and in the words of John Denver, “Feels good to be back home again”. I love road trips and I love coming home from them. I was time traveling in a sense. Going back to where I came from and seeing anew what I used to take for granted. The older you get, the more special those moments are. Now to our list of celebratory events: Fish Tank Floorshow Night, International Right To Know Day, National Good Neighbor Day, National Strawberry Cream Pie Day (yum), National Read A Child A Book Day and my pick, National Drink Beer Day. Yes, I think I will. Now let’s continue down the path of history. In 1066 on this day, William the Conqueror invaded England. On this day in 1528, a Spanish fleet was sunk by a hurricane off the coast of Florida and 380 people died. This is the day in 1701 that divorce was made legal in Maryland. In 1785 on this day, Napoleon Bonaparte graduated from a military school in Paris at the age of 16. He finished 42nd in a class of 51. In 1887 on this day the Yellow River flooded China killing between 900,000 and 2 million people becoming one of the deadliest natural disasters in history. On this day in 1891 at the age of 72 the author Herman Melville died. The first quote I read is the one I’m going to use: “Of all the preposterous assumptions of humanity over humanity, nothing exceeds most of the criticisms made on the habits of the poor by the well-housed, well-warmed, and well-fed.” The last quote for this day comes from Georg Simmel who was a German sociologist, philosopher and critic who died at the age of 60 in 1918. Georg said, “An educated person is one who knows how to find out what he does not know.” Now I’m off to enjoy this once in a lifetime day. Abide.
