It is the 14th day of the month of September 2021. How do I greet this day with enthusiasm? Huxley said, “The secret of genius is to carry the sprit of the child into old age, which means never losing your enthusiasm”. It’s important to nurture the part of the child we still have. I’m planning to have very good Tuesday. After all, it’s Eat A Hoagie Day, Gobstopper Day (bubble gum), National Cream-Filled Doughnut Day, National Coloring Day and National Ants On A Log Day. I’ll go with the Hoagie. The best one I’ve ever had is the one from the White House Sub Shop in Atlantic City. Now to history. On this day in 1812, the Great Fire of Moscow began. As Napoleon approaches Moscow, the retreating Russians burn it and the fire continues to burn for five days. This is the day in 1814 that Francis Scott Key pens the poem “Defense of Fort M’Henry“, later known as “The Star-Spangled Banner”. In 1899 on this day, Henry Bliss became 1st automobile fatality in the US (NY). Finally, on this day in 1955 Little Richard recorded Tutti Frutti. This is the day in 1769 that Alexander von Humboldt was born. He passed at the age of 89 in 1859. He was a German polymath, geographer, naturalist, explorer, and Romantic Philosopher. I will end this post with two of his observations: “I am more and more convinced that our happiness or our unhappiness depends far more on the way we meet the events of life than on the nature of those events, themselves” and “It is a characteristic of old age to find the progress of time accelerated. The less one accomplishes in a given time, the shorter does the retrospect appear”. I think he means that we should have a good attitude and stay busy. Sounds like a plan to me. Abide.
