Welcome to August 30th, 2021. I woke up this morning in a nice warm bed. Had clean clothes to wear. Food in the kitchen to eat. I walk around with a computer in my pocket called an iPhone. Wear a computer on my wrist called an iwatch. A car to drive and a golfcart to drive if I don’t want to drive the car. Money in the bank. I feel lucky, grateful and happy as a fat rat in a cheese factory. Life is good. Today is Frankenstein Day, International Wale Shark Day, Motorist Consideration Monday, Toasted Marshmallow Day, National Beach Day and Slinky Day. Not a great list to choose from. Now to the history of August 30th. On this day in 1146 the crossbow was banned by European leaders to end wars forever. In 1692, William Penn set sail for America. One of my ancestors was on the boat. On this day in 1890 President Benjamin Harrison signed the 1st US Law requiring the inspection of meat. On this date in 1954, hurricane Carol killed 68 people on the East Coast. On this day in 1967 Thurgood Marshall was sworn in as the 1st African American Supreme Court Justice. This is the birthday of the comedian Lewis Black. I’ll give you one of Mr. Black’s observations: “If a group of people – leaders – can convince a group of folks who barely have a pot to piss in that the rich shouldn’t be taxed- THAT is leadership!” On this day in 2006 the Egyptian poet and Noble Laureate Naguib Mahfouz’s life ended. He said, “Fear does not prevent death, it prevents life” and “You can tell a man is clever by his answers. You can tell a man is wise by his questions”. Another post completed. Abide.
