The earth is about to rotate into the sun light of August 28th, 2021. It looks like the people who live on the Gulf coast in Louisiana are going to endure another massive hurricane. I hope the levees that protect the Big Easy hold back the water. New Orleans is one of my favorite cities and I want to go back early next year. Today is International Read Comics in Public Day, National Bow Tie Day, National Cherry Turnovers Day, National Thoughtful Day and Pony Express Day. The cherry turnovers do sound really good. Now this day’s history: In 1565 on August 28th Pedro Menendez de Avilies landed in what is now Florida and founded St. Augustine. This is the day in 1837 that pharmacists John Lea & William Perrins began to manufacture Worcestershire Sauce. On this day in 1862 Belle Boyd was released from Old Capital Prison in Washington, D.C. She was one of the most famous female Confederate spies. You might want to google her. She’s an interesting character. This is the day in 1917 that ten suffragists were arrested as they picketed the White House. This is the day in 1957 that US Senator James Thurmond (Rep, SC) began a 24-hr filibuster against the Civil Rights bill. Finally, this is the day in 1963 that Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I have a dream” speech. On this day in1749 Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, German writer and social philosopher was born. He said, “We know accurately only when we know little, with knowledge doubt increases.” What he means is that the more you know about a problem, the more difficult the solution is. This is also the day In 1993 that William Stafford, a poet and pacifist stopped living. William said, “Wisdom is having things right in your life and knowing why” and “Once you decide to do right, life is easy. There are no distractions.” Both are powerful quotes. I hope I’ve provided some food for thought. That was my plan. Abide.
