August 23, 2020 is here. Mother Earth has been waiting over 4.54 billion years for this day to arrive. Mankind, not so long. We’ve only been here for around for 200,000 years and we only started really running this place in the last 6,000 years. I wonder what will follow us? I guess I’m lucky that I won’t ever know. That’s stuff of the future and I’m going to spend this day in the present and today is Corn Day, Cuban Sandwich Day, Daffodil Day, International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, Hug Your Sweetheart Day, Valentino Day, Ride The Wind Day, National Cheap Flight Day and National Sponge Cake Day. My historical footnotes for today begin in the year 79 when Mount Vesuvius erupted on the feast day of Vulcan, Roman god of fire, and destroyed Pompeii. On this day in 1305 William Wallace, Scottish patriot, is executed for high treason by Edward I of England. On this day in 1617 the 1st one-way streets opened in London. In 1789 on this day, the National Assembly of France (French revolution) proclaimed freedom of religious opinions. And on this day in 2005 hurricane Katrina forms over the Bahamas. I’ve already told you that on this day William Wallace (Brave Heart) was executed so I’ll give you one of his quotes: “All men die but not all men really live”. This is the date in 1992 that Vernon Howard, a spiritual teacher and philosopher stopped living. I’ll end this post with some of his insights: “You have succeeded in life when all you really want is only what you really need”. “You have it made when you don’t care if you made it or not”. And, “Learn to see things as they really are, not as we image them to be”. All good quotes that resonate with me. Enough for today. Make this once in your lifetime day something special if you can. Be sure to Abide.
