This new day is named July 25, 2021. Nothing special planned for this 24 hour period. No memories will be made, at least not by design. It will be a good day for me. They all are. I stopped relying on other people to make my days pleasant a long time ago. It’s my job now. There are lots of celebratory events on today’s list: Culinarians Day, Health and Happiness with Hypnosis Day, International Red Shoe Day, National Carousel Day, National Hire A Veteran Day, National Hot Fudge Sundae Day and National Wine And Cheese Day. I will have wine and cheese today and maybe a sundae too. Now the historical footnotes: On this day in 1520, the Spanish conquest of Tripoli began. Over 3,000 people were killed and more than 5,000 inhabitants enslaved. This is the day in 1897 that writer Jack London set sail to join the Klondike Gold Rush where he wrote his first successful books. On this day in 1940, John Sigmund began swimming for 89 hours, 46 minutes from St. Louis to Caruthersville, Missouri in the Mississippi River; 292 miles is the longest solo swim of all time. And, this is the day in 1965 that Bob Dylan is booed by sections of the crowd at the Newport Folk Festival for performing with an electric guitar and marks the beginning of folk-rock. On this day in 1834 the English poet and philosopher Samuel Taylor died. He said, “The happiness of life is made up of minute fractions – the little, soon forgotten charities of a kiss or a smile, a kind look or heartfelt compliment.” I know he’s right. Now I’m going to live the rest of this day. Be sure you Abide.
