Father’s Day, June 20 2021. A lot of the person I’ve become is from having watched my Father live his life. He was a farmer. The best word to describe him is “dignity” which means being worthy of honor or respect. Wish he was still here. Moving on. Today is American Eagle Day, Anne and Samantha Day (Anne Frank and Samantha Smith), National Hike with a Geek Day, International Surfing Day, National Ice Cream Soda Day. Plain Yogurt Day, World Humanist Day, The First Day of Summer and National Vanilla Milkshake Day. There’s more but that’s enough. I’ll go with the yogurt. Now the footnotes: In 1627, on or about this day, Ottoman pirates began raids on Icelandic villages and will eventually capture over 400 people to sell into slavery. On this day in 1782 Congress approved the Great Seal of the United States of America and the bald eagle as its symbol. This is the day in 1893 that Lizzie Borden is acquitted of the 1892 axe murders of her father and stepmother in Fall River, Massachusetts. This is the day in 1975 that “Jaws” was released. In 1980 “Blues Brothers” with Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi opened in 594 theaters on this day. I’m going to end this post with some quotes about fatherhood: “A father’s smile has been known to light up a child’s entire day.” —Susan Gale. “My father used to say that it’s never too late to do anything you wanted to do. And he said, ‘You never know what you can accomplish until you try.’” —Michael Jordan. “What I learned most from my father wasn’t anything he said; it was just the way he behaved.” —Jeff Bridges.
