The first weekend of “normal” is over. May 3rd, 2021 is here. The only word that I can use to describe this weekend is fantastic. Hugs aplenty. Since it was outside and all are vaccinated, there wasn’t a mask to be seen. Great memories were made. Today is National Chocolate Custard Day, Garden Meditation Day, National Raspberry Popover Day, Public Radio Day, Sun Day and Wordsmith Day. As usual, chocolate get’s my vote. On this day in 1621, Francis Bacon was accused of bribery. At the time he was one of the most powerful people in English government. Politicians accepting “gifts” goes back a long way. In 1765 the 1st North American medical college opened in Philadelphia. In 1802 Washington DC was incorporated. This is the day in 1861 that Lincoln asked for 42,000 Army Volunteers and another 18,000 seamen. In 1901 on this day fire destroyed 1,700 buildings in Jacksonville, Florida. Finally, in 1921 West Virginia imposes 1st state sales tax. Today is Golda Meir’s birthday. She was an Israeli stateswoman, politician, teacher, and kibbutznik who served as the fourth Prime Minister of Israel. Golda said, “My dear, old age is like an airplane flying in a storm. Once you’re in it there’s nothing you can do. You can’t stop a plane, you can’t stop a storm, you can’t stop time. So you might as well take it easy, with wisdom.” This is the day that Kanō Jigorō died. He is the person who invented Judo. He said, “It is not important to be better than someone else, but to be better than yesterday.” Every morning is a new opportunity to be a better you. Abide.
