Another day is upon us. It’s April 29th, 2021. I’m going to do my best to make this day a really good one. It’s up to me. We are returning to normal. Most of the people in the bubble are vaccinated. The science now tells us that our chances of catching the virus outside is next to zero. That means “near normal”. Enough reason to celebrate. It’s also National Peace Rose Day, International Dance Day, Zipper Day, World Stationery Day, Poem In Your Pocket, Thank You Thursday and Shrimp Scampi Day. I’ll go with the Shrimp. Very yummy. Now the history: This is the day in 1707 that the English and Scottish parliaments accept the Act of Union which creates the United Kingdom of Great Britain. On this day in 1715 English Astronomer John Flamsteed observed Uranus for the 6th time. In 1905 on this day, 2″ rain fell in 10 mins in Taylor, Texas. Wow. In 1961 ABC’s “Wide World of Sports” first aired. Finally, this is the day in 1967 that “Respect” was released by Aretha Franklin. Today is also Willie Nelson’s birthday (1933). Willie said, “My doctor tells me I should start slowing it down – but there are more old drunks than there are old doctors so let’s all have another round.” This is also the day that Jean Nidetch died at the age of 91. Here is her story: One day in 1961, Jean Nidetch, a 214-pound Queens housewife with a 44-inch waist and an addiction to cookies by the box, ran into a neighbor at the supermarket. “Oh, Jean, you look so good!” the neighbor said. “When are you due?” Jean shed 72 pounds and helped found Weight Watchers. Here’s a quote: “It’s choice – not chance – that determines your destiny.” I agree. That’s enough for you and I to begin to shape this day. Abide..
