We’ve made it halfway through the month of April 2021. So far it’s been a pretty good month. Each day we are moving closer and closer to normal and soon our pandemic will be past to become a historical footnote. The 15th is Jackie Robinson Day, MacDonald’s Day, National Ask An Atheist Day, National Spiral Sliced Ham Day, Take A Wild Guess Day, Titanic Remembrance Day and National That Sucks Day. Nothing on the list to get excited about. Now to the “what happened” part of the post. On this day in 1850, San Francisco was incorporated. In 1861 the Federal army (75,000 volunteers) was mobilized by US President Abraham Lincoln to fight the Civil War. This is the day in 1865 that Lincoln died 9 hours after he was shot attending the play “Our American Cousin” at Ford’s Theatre in Washington. This is the day in 1912 that the RMS Titanic sank at 2:27 AM off Newfoundland as the band played on, with the loss of between 1,490 and 1,635 people. Finally, this is the day in 1945 that FDR is buried on the grounds of his Hyde Park home. This is Leonardo da Vinci’s birthday (1452). He said, “Iron rusts from disuse; water loses its purity from stagnation… even so does inaction sap the vigor of the mind.” Another way of saying it is “use it or lose it”. Since this is the day Lincoln died, I’ll end this post with some of his wisdom: “Folks are usually about as happy as they make their minds up to be.” “When I do good, I feel good. When I do bad, I feel bad. That’s my religion.” “Those who deny freedom to others, deserve it not for themselves”. That’s enough for this day and this post. Abide.
