We have arrived at the place in space designated to be April 13, 2021. All the signs indicate a good day ahead for us. At least according to the weather forecast. There will be 10,400 new people, give or take a few joining us today and 7,500 people, give or take a few will leave us today and since I’m not one of them, life continues to be good. Today is April 13th and that means it is National Be Nice To Lawyers Day, National Library Workers Day, National Make Lunch Count Day, Thomas Jefferson Day and my pick National Peach Cobbler Day. Now to the history section of this post: In 1668 John Dryden was appointed first English poet laureate by Charles II. I only bring this up to give you one quote from John, “We first make our habits, and then our habits make us.” In 1796 the first elephant arrived in the US from India. On this day in 1911 The US House of Representatives voted to institute direct elections of senators to Congress. In 1934 in the depths of the depression 4.7 million US families were reported receiving welfare payments. This is Thomas Jefferson’s birthday, here are two quotes from him, “In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock.” and “I never considered a difference of opinion in politics, in religion, in philosophy, as cause for withdrawing from a friend.” Particularly good advice. I didn’t find anyone else with interesting quotes this morning so this is one more from Thomas: “He who knows best knows how little he knows.” With that, I’ll leave you to live this special, once in your life day. Abide.
