It’s February 11th 2020. We get one chance to make it a good day and then, it disappears into the mist and becomes yesterday. Marcus Aurelius said, “Time is a sort of river of passing events, and strong is its current; no sooner is a thing brought to sight than it is swept by and another takes its place, and this too will be swept away. ” Here are the commission’s suggestions: Fat Thursday, Get Out Your Guitar Day, Grandmother Achievement Day, National Don’t Cry Over Spilled Milk Day, National Peppermint Patty Day, Satisfied Staying Single Day and National Make A Friend Day. Several of these are interesting. I don’t have a real guitar, but I do have real ukuleles and I will pick one up and play today. I’ll go with that. Now to the history part of this post. In 1794 the 1st session of the US Senate was opened to the public. In 1809 and this date, Robert Fulton received a patent for the steamboat. In 1812 Massachusetts Governor Elbridge Gerry signed a redistricting bill resulting in the first “gerrymander”. For those of you who don’t know what a gerrymander is, it’s when you design voting districts to favor your party in the next election. In 1852, the first British public female toilet opened on Bedford Street in London. In 1902 police beat up universal suffrage demonstrators in Brussels. In 1942 on this date the “Archie” comic book was published. In 1963 American chef Julia Child’s show “The French Chef” premiered. You can still watch some of these shows on YouTube and improve your kitchen skills. Finally, in 1978 China lifted a ban on Aristotle, Shakespeare, & Dickens. This is the birthday (1847) of Thomas Edison. He said, “There’s a way to do it better – find it.” And that, my friends, is how an inventor thinks. I’ll end this post with a quote from Heraclius who was the Byzantine emperor from 610 to 641. He said, “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.” Make today a good one. Abide.
