This is the 5th day of the second month of 2021. We are in the countdown to normal. Since I’m now vaccinated, I have to see my dentist and find a barber. Two steps back to the way it used to be. I’m looking forward to a sit down meal in a restaurant and going to a movie. Most of all, I’m anxious for the Parrot Head phlockings to start again. I need to see friends and listen to some trop rock music and happy hour drink prices. Until we get there, we can celebrate this day because it’s National Shower with a Friend Day, National Weatherperson’s Day, World Nutella Day, National Chocolate Fondue Day, Western Monarch Day and (drum roll) National Fart Day. Yes, passing wind gets its own day. If someone asks you to pull their finger, they are just celebrating. Moving onto the historical footnotes of this day: In 1597 a group of early Japanese Christians, known as the 26 Martyrs, were killed by the new government of Japan for being seen as a threat to Japanese society. On this day in 1870 the 1st motion picture was shown to a theater audience in Philadelphia. This is the day in 1922 that Reader’s Digest was first published. In 1969 the US population reached 200 million. Lastly, this is the day in 1978 that a blizzard formed in the North East and 100 people died in New England and New York over 3 days. Today is William S. Burroughs birthday (1914). He was a writer and artist. He said, “Most of the trouble in this world has been caused by folks who can’t mind their own business, because they have no business of their own to mind”. Maybe so. This is also the day that Thomas Carlyle’s life ended. He was a Scottish historian, satirical writer, essayist, translator, philosopher, mathematician, and teacher. He said, “Show me the man you honor, and I will know what kind of man you are.” I agree with Thomas. That’s enough for this day. Abide.
