The sign marker is 1.30.2021. Our journey through January is nearly done. It’s been special. The drama is far from over. But the drama, like the pandemic will pass. Yes, I’m optimistic about the future. The Commission has decreed that this day is National Croissant Day, National Escape Day, National Inane Answering Message Day and Yodel for Your Neighbors Day. None of these celebratory events rise to the level of a party. Best to move onto history. This first one caught my attention. In 1661 Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England is ritually executed after having been dead for two years. It seems that Mr. Cromwell defeated the King Charles I in a civil war and became the ruler of England, Scotland and Ireland. He died shortly there after of natural causes and when the monarchy was re-established under Charles II, they dug him up and cut off his head. In 1800 the US population was 5,308,483. The African Americans numbered 1,002,037 or 19%. In 1894 on this date the pneumatic hammer is patented by Charles King of Detroit. In 1933 “Lone Ranger” begins a 21-year run on ABC radio. Finally, this is the date in 1948 that Mahatma Gandhi is assassinated by a Hindu extremist. I put Gandhi at the same level as Buddha, the Dali Lama, Confucius, etc. Two quotes: “Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.” “An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind.” He certainly is one of the people I’d like to spend a day with. This is Franklin D. Roosevelt’s birthday (1882). He’s another person I’d like to meet. He became President at one of the most difficult time in America’s history. He said, “We are trying to construct a more inclusive society. We are going to make a country in which no one is left out.” He also said “In politics, nothing happens by accident. If it happens, you can bet it was planned that way.” Since this is the date of Gandhi’s death, I’ll end this post with another of his quotes, “A man is but the product of his thoughts what he thinks, he becomes.” It’s your attitude. Have an excellent day. Abide
