It’s now January 25, 2021. I expect another beautiful Florida winter day. That means sunshine and low 80s. I plan to spend some time outside generating some vitamin D. Hoping to get the vaccine booster shot next week and to start ending my social isolation. Yes, today I have high expectations for the near future. We have a new list of special events to consider: It’s A Room Of Your Own Day. This day comes via Virginia Woolf who wrote a poem of the same name. You should have a place to yourself that you can be creative in. I agree. I have one. It’s also National Irish Coffee Day, National Opposites Day and Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day. The opposites day is celebrated by saying one thing and doing another. Should be called Politicians Day. This time of the day, I’ll pick any day with the word Coffee in it. Now to the history section of this post. There’s not much. In 1881 Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell form the Oriental Telephone Company. Alexander said, “When one door closes, another opens”. In 1924 the 1st Winter Olympic Games open in Chamonix, France. In 1939 Joe Louis KOs John Henry Lewis in 1 for heavyweight boxing title. In 1945 Grand Rapids, Michigan, becomes 1st US city to fluoridate its water. Finally, In 1964 on this date, the Beatles get their first US #1, “I Want to Hold your Hand”. This is the birthday (1874) of the English writer W. Somerset Maugham. He said, “The fact that a great many people believe something is no guarantee of its truth”. He also said, “The unfortunate thing about this world is that the good habits are much easy to give up than the bad ones”. Both pearls of wisdom are true. This is the day that Mary Tyler Moore stopped living at the age of 80. Mary said, “Take chances, make mistakes. That’s how you grow. Pain nourishes your courage. You have to fail in order to practice being brave.” I didn’t realize that she was diabetic who came close to losing a foot more than once. That’s about it for this day. Have a good one. Abide.
