We’ve are now in the time/space of January 18, 2021. I’m sitting in front of my computer with a large mug of coffee. This is the way I start each day. I have a short, one way conversation with each of you, look at the designated celebratory events and history of this day. I’m trying to make each day as unique and special as I can. It’s like the Pooh meme: Pooh: “What day is it?” Piglet: “It’s today, my favorite day.” And it just so happens that January 18 is Winnie the Pooh Day. It’s also National Gourmet Coffee Day, National Peking Duck Day, Thesaurus Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Now the history of this day: on this day in 532 The Nika (poor people) staged a revolt against Emperor Justinian I in Constantinople. It failed and 30,000 Niki were taken to the Hippodrome and killed. Wow. 1644 the Pilgrims in Boston reported America’s 1st UFO sighting. In 1733 America’s 1st polar bear exhibition was held in Boston. In 1896 the 1st demonstration of an X-ray machine in US was held in New York City. In 1943 the government bans selling sliced bread. It was part of the war effort to divert metal used in manufacturing to weapons production. This is A. A. Milne’s birthday (1882). He is the author of the Winnie the Pooh books. He said “You will be better advised to watch what we do instead of what we say.” That is excellent advice particularly when dealing with politics. This is also the day in 1936 when Rudyard Kipling drew his last breath at the age of 70. I’ve given you the following quote by Kipling but it’s so profound that I’ll give it to you again “All the people like us are We, and everyone else is They.” I’ll end this post with a quote from Piglet who said, ““I wonder what’s going to happen exciting today?” My too Piglet, me too. Abide.
