We’ve now reached milepost 01.10.2022. As most of you are aware, showing kindness is one of the activities I promote. I looked up “acts of kindness” and here are a few suggestions for you: Call a friend you haven’t seen in a while; compliment a stranger; tell someone you’re grateful for what they do for you; be a big tipper; give up your spot in line; thank the cashier by her/his name, and above all, don’t be a jerk (applies to reacting to people who are). It’s Houseplant Appreciation Day, National Bittersweet Chocolate Day, National Oysters Rockefeller Day, National Cut Your Energy Costs Day, Save the Eagles Day and Peculiar People Day. I’m going with Oysters since I’ve developed a taste for these bivalve mollusks. Now to history. This is the date in 49 BC that Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon uttering “alea lacta est” (the die is cast) and started a civil war that made him Roman dictator for life. On this day in 1776 Thomas Paine published the pamphlet “Common Sense” advocating American Independence. In 1917, suffragettes called the “Silent Sentinels” held their first protest outside The White House led by Alice Paul and the National Woman’s Party. She said, “We women of America tell you that America is not a democracy. Twenty million women are denied the right to vote.” She was the driving force behind the suffragette movement. This is the day that the Noble winning author Sinclair Lewis died in 1951. He is funny, sarcastic and brutally honest. Here are some of his quotes that I like: “Since dictating the bible, and hiring a perfect race of ministers to explain it, God has never done much but creep around and try to catch us disobeying it.” “When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the American flag.” I’ll end with “People will buy anything that is one to a customer.” Be kind today and Abide.
