We’ve reached day number 6 in 2021. I look forward each morning to lifting up the lid on each day and looking though what’s in this box. After all, they do call it the “present”. To me each new day is a gift. This day is Apple Tree Day, Bean Day, Cuddle Up Day, National Shortbread Day, National Take a Poet to Lunch Day, National Take Down the Christmas Tree Day, National Smith Day and National Weigh-In Day. Since I do write poetry, you could take me to lunch but since you’re not vaccinated and I’m not vaccinated, I’ll go with the beans. They are the magical fruit. Now to the historical events which happened on January 6: In 1649 the English Parliament votes to put Charles I on trial for treason and other “high crimes”. Impeachment comes from English law. 1929 Mother Teresa arrives in Calcutta to begin her work among India’s poorest people. She said, “If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one.” On this day in 1841, FDR gives his 4 Freedom’s speech to Congress. They are Freedom of Speech and Religion and Freedom from Want and Fear. Today is coach Lou Holtz’s birthday. Lou said, “Ability is what you’re capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.” He also said “I’m so old, I don’t buy green bananas anymore”. This is also the day in 1919 that President Theodore Roosevelt drew his last breath at the age of 60. When you look up his quotes, it’s a treasure chest of wisdom. He said, “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” He also said, “If you could kick the person in the pants responsible for most of your trouble, you wouldn’t sit for a month.” He would be a fun guy to have a beer with. That’s enough wisdom for this day. Be careful, normal is almost here but it’s not here yet. Abide.
