We have arrived at December 23rd, 2020. Around 150,000 people who made it to yesterday didn’t make it to today. We did and that is a good enough to appreciate this day. I refuse to allow the chaos to rob me of today’s happiness. Serenity is not freedom from the storm, but peace amid the storm. Today it’s Festivus (the holiday for the rest of us), National Pfeffernüsse Day and Roots Day Pfeffernüsses are small hard Swedish cookies that back great memories of Christmas past. Now let’s climb in the way back machine. In 1888 Vincent van Gogh cuts off his left ear with a razor, after an argument with fellow painter Paul Gauguin, and sends to a prostitute for safe keeping. Here’s a quote from van Gogh “I put my heart and my soul into my work, and have lost my mind in the process.” In 1954 the first human kidney transplant is performed. In 1930 Bette Davis arrives in Hollywood under contract to Universal Studios. She’s an interesting lady. Here’s a quote: “I’d marry again if I found a man who had fifteen million dollars, would sign over half to me, and guarantee that he’d be dead within a year.” Her eyes were her best feature. This date is the birthday of Madam C. J. Walker who is the first self–made African American female millionaire. Born in the Delta in 1867, she had everything going against her. Here’s a quote from her, “I am a woman who came from the cotton fields of the South. From there I was promoted to the washtub. From there I was promoted to the cook kitchen and from there I promoted myself into the business of manufacturing hair goods and preparations” I sure she was a remarkable person. That’s enough for this day. Hope you enjoy it. Abide.
