12/20/2020. The pile of Christmas presents under our tree continues to grow as do the empty Amazon boxes in the garage. We should all celebrate the farewell to the time space of 2020. The first several months of 2021 will be worse but it will all be over soon. Three cheers for the science of vaccines!! On this day it is Go Caroling Day, National Sangria Day, Mudd Day, Sacagawea Day and Dot Your I’s Day. I’m going with sangria. Dr. Mudd is the person who treated and hid John Wilkes Booth. Sacagawea is the Shoshone Indian woman who, as interpreter, traveled thousands of wilderness miles with the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Onto history: On this date in 1669 the 1st jury trial in Delaware is held and Marcus Jacobson is found guilty of insurrection and sentenced to flogging, branding & slavery. After the whipping, they branded him with an “R” on his face and sold him to a plantation in Barbados. In 1893 on this date the 1st state anti-lynching statute approved in Georgia. I’m always a little surprised when a law is passed to make what is obviously a crime, a crime. In 1920, Bob Hope becomes an American citizen. Turns out Bob was born in England and moved here. In 1946 the Christmas classic “It’s a Wonderful Life” film premieres in New York on this date. Finally, in 1990 The world’s first website and server go live at CERN, and life on earth changed. This is the date in 1968 that John Steinbeck, the author of Grapes of Wrath dies at 66. He said: “If you’re in trouble, or hurt or need – go to the poor people. They’re the only ones that’ll help – the only ones.” Another of his I like is “No one wants advice – only corroboration”. It would be fun to spend some time with John. That’s enough for this day. Stay safe and Abide.
