December 19, 2020 is where we are at. It’s a path through time space that we only travel for a 24 hour period and then we are in the next segment. That’s the way it’s been for the last 4.54 billion years and will always be. What I find amazing is that dinosaurs ruled the earth for 167 million years and never figured out how to make shoes or pizza. Moving on. Today is Holly Day, Look For An Evergreen Day, National EMO Day (type of music), National Hard Candy Day, National Wreaths Across America Day and my selection to celebrate is National Oatmeal Muffin Day. Who doesn’t love a nice warm chewy muffin with butter and jam on a winter morning? Sounds good doesn’t it? This history of this day has some interesting footnotes. This is the day in 1686 that according to Daniel Defoe, Robinson Crusoe leaves his island after 28 years. On this day in 1732, Ben Franklin, under the name Richard Saunders begins publication of “Poor Richard’s Almanack”. In 1843 on this day, “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens is published and 6,000 copies are sold. In 1887 on this day Jake Kilrain & Jem Smith fight 106 round bare knuckle draw. The rules for bare knuckle boxing are different. When someone is knocked down that is a “round”. Then they have to return to a mark in the ring and the next round starts. They went 106 rounds. Wow. This is one of those rare days when I can’t find anyone to quote. So I searched on “Christmas” and found a few. Edna Ferber said, “Christmas isn’t a season, it’s a feeling”. Moliere said, “It is a fine seasoning for joy to think of those we love.” I’ll end with Billy the Elf who said, “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is to sing loud for all to hear”. I know it’s not profound or thought provoking but it’s my favorite Christmas movie. Stay safe. Eat a muffin if you have one and Abide.
