Earth is now in the time/space designated November 17th, 2020. Writing this post each day requires me to review mankind’s recorded events over the last couple of thousand years. While we have our share of chaos, we live lives so much better than our ancestors did. Food, drink, shelter, transportation, clothes, fresh water and the list goes on and on. I don’t spend my time thinking about what I want. I do spend time each day being thankful for what I’ve got. With that said, the High Commission on Daily Holidays has selected this day be Electronic Greeting Card Day, Homemade Bread Day, National Unfriend Day, National Baklava Day, National Take a Hike Day and International Happy Gose Day. Gose is a particular kind of German beer. Nothing stands out in this list for me. I used to make a lot of homemade bread but don’t do that anymore. Onto history: On this day in 1800 Congress holds its 1st session in Washington, D.C. in an incomplete Capitol Building. In 1853 on this day, street signs at intersections authorized in San Francisco. In 1928 Notre Dame finally loses a football game at home after 23 years. Wow. In 1936 Edgar Bergen & Charlie McCarthy become overnight success on radio. In 1956 Syracuse fullback Jim Brown, scores NCAA record of 43 pts (vs Colgate). This is Martin Scorsese’s birthday. His films are many of my favorites: Raging Bull, Taxi Driver and Goodfellas. Martin said, “And as I’ve gotten older, I’ve had more of a tendency to look for people who live by kindness, tolerance, compassion, a gentler way of looking at things.” This is the day that Mirra Alfassa who was an Indian spiritual leader stopped living at the age of 95. Mirra said, “Do not pretend – be. Do not promise – act. Do not dream – realize”. Both are interesting quotes. One more wow for Notre Dame. 23 years is a long time. Have as good a day as you decide. Abide.
