The sign says 10.8.2020. I think this is a good day to be alive. Every day is. There are some bad ones but I’ll take the few of those I get in return for the more numerous good days. I learned a long time ago that I’m mostly in control of what kind of a day it’s going to be. Let’s see what we can celebrate on October 8, 2020? It’s National Fluffernutter Day, National Pierogi Day, American Touch Tag Day, Alvin C. York Day, World Octopus Day and International Lesbian Day. A Fluffernutter is a marshmallow, peanut butter on bread thing. I do understand Pierogis. Pastry filled with mashed potatoes, sauerkraut or farmer’s cheese, fried crisp with some sour cream on the side. Yum! I also think that Garry Cooper’s best movie was Sargent York. This happens to be the day in 1918 that Alvin attacked a machine gun nest, killed at least 25 and captured 132 Germans all by himself. On this day in 1871 there were two large fires. A forest fire destroyed Peshtigo, Wisconsin, killing between 1,200 and 2,500 people, making it the deadliest wildfire in recorded history and Great Fire of Chicago which killed 200 people and destroys over 4 square miles of buildings and the original Emancipation Proclamation. And, this is the day in 1971 that John Lennon releases “Imagine”. This is the day in 1793 that John Hancock who was 1st to sign the Declaration of Independence, dies at 56. After he signed, he said, “There! His Majesty can now read my name without glasses. And he can double the reward on my head.” We should never forget that our founders were rebels who overthrew their government. Another of his quotes that I like is “A chip on the shoulder is too heavy a piece of baggage to carry through life. “ In other words, just let the bad stuff go. That’s it for this day. Now it’s up to you. Abide.
