It’s now August 22 2020. The soon to be hurricanes are stacking up like airplanes heading to Orlando. Get ready for some wind and rain next week. Last night at 4:30, I came up with a new motto appropriate for the chaos: “Less BS and More Ice Cream”. That’s what I’m looking for. Both a metaphor and a simple statement of what I want. I think it belongs on a t shirt. Moving on. Today is Be an Angel Day, National Bao Day, National Eat a Peach Day, Southern Hemisphere Hoodie Hoo Day, National Tooth Fairy Day and National Pecan Torte Day, which is close to Ice Cream. Good enough for me. Now to the history of this day. In 1791 on this day the Haitian Slave Revolution begins under voodoo priest Dutty Boukman. He was captured in Senagal, enslaved and transported to Jamaica, eventually ended up in Haiti, where he became a leader of the Maroons and a voodoo priest. After the revolt got underway, he was captured and killed by the French who displayed his head to prove he wasn’t invincible. Wow. On this day in 1865 William Sheppard is issued the first US patent for liquid soap. This is the day in 1902 US President Theodore Roosevelt became 1st US chief executive to ride in a car. And, this is the day in 1966 that the Beatles arrived in New York City. Today is Deng Xiaoping, Chinese revolutionary’s birthday and China’s leader from 1978 to 1992. He said, ” When our thousands of Chinese students abroad return home, you will see how China will transform itself.” He had a plan. This is also the day in 1922 that Michael Collins, Irish nationalist leader is killed in ambush during the Irish Civil War at 31. He said,”Let us be judged for what we attempted rather than what we achieved”. On this day in 1989 Huey Newton, African-American activist is murdered in Oakland, California at the age of 47. Huey said, “You can jail a Revolutionary, but you can’t jail the Revolution.” Writing this post each day confirms to me that the chaos of today is an a continuation of the chaos of the past. What we really need is Less BS and More Ice Cream… Abide.
