It’s August 13, 2020. A 24 hour slice of time/space which will be important to a few of us and just another day for most of the 7.8 billion people who inhabit this ball flying through space. Life is short. Don’t waste it. Today we have a short list of celebratory events: Black Women’s Equal Pay Day, International Left-Handers Day, National Filet Mignon Day and National Prosecco Day. I’ll go with the wine and steak. Always a good choice. This is thought to be the date in 3114 BC that marks the start of the Mayan calendar. In the year 1521 on this date the Spanish conquistadors under Hernán Cortés capture Aztec Emperor Cuauhtémoc in Tenochtitlan marking the end of the Aztec Empire. On this day in 1732 Voltaire’s “Zaire” premieres in Paris. Voltaire has great quotes and this is one of my favorites: “Every man is guilty of all the good he did not do.” This is the day in 1914 that Carl Wickman begins Greyhound, the 1st US bus line, in Minnesota. Finally, this is the day in 1967 that “Bonnie and Clyde” starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, is released. Today is Alfred Hitchcock’s birthday (1899). He said, “Always make the audience suffer as much as possible.” This is also the day in 1946 that H. G. Wells, English sci-fi author dies at 79. He said, “Adapt or perish, now as ever, is nature’s inexorable imperative.” That’s enough for this day. Adapt (wear the mask) and Abide.
