August 7th 2020 is here. Looks like the 6th so far. Probably won’t be a big change but who knows? I expect the same level of chaos. In 100 years, nothing that happens today will really matter. That’s an oddly comforting fact. Today is Beach Party Day, Braham Pie Day (Braham is a small town in Minnesota), International Beer Day, National Lighthouse Day, Professional Speakers Day, Sea Serpent Day, Purple Heart Day and Raspberries ‘n Cream Day. I’ll pick the pie. I never wanted a Purple Heart and that was one of the reasons I joined the Navy . This is the day in 1782 that George Washington created the Purple Heart medal. On this day in 1912 the Bull Moose Party Theodore Roosevelt for US President. This party still exists and I joined it. I like the platform and mascot. This is also the day 1957 that Congress passes the Civil Rights Act of 1957 which was designed to provide federal protection for African-American voting rights. Finally, this is the day in 1966 of the race riot in Lansing Michigan. If you research it, you’ll find it’s the same then as it is now. Same ingredients, same results. Today is the birthday (1933) science fiction writer Jerry Pournelle. One of my favorites. He said, “The hard part of writing at all is sitting your ass down in a chair and writing it. There’s always something better to do.” This is the day in 1941 Rabindranath Tagore, Indian philosopher, poet, writer dies at 80. He said, “Gray hairs are signs of wisdom if you hold your tongue, speak and they are but hairs, as in the young.” Probably true. Enough for today. Abide.
