This new day is named July 25, 2020. It will not be much different than the one we lived yesterday. If you go to the National Hurricane Center you will find two tropical depressions that need to be watched. Outside of that, not much that is new about this day. There are lots of celebratory events on today’s list: Culinarians Day, Health and Happiness with Hypnosis Day, International Red Shoe Day, National Carousel Day, National Day of the American Cowboy, National Hire A Veteran Day, National Hot Fudge Sundae Day and National Wine And Cheese Day. I’m inclined to go with the wine and cheese but the sundae does sound good too. This is the day in 1897 that writer Jack London sets sail to join the Klondike Gold Rush where he will write his first successful stories. On this day in 1940, John Sigmund begins swimming for 89 hours, 46 minutes from St. Louis to Caruthersville, Missouri in the Mississippi River; 292 miles, longest solo swim of all time. And, this is the day in 1965 that Bob Dylan is booed by sections of the crowd at the Newport Folk Festival for performing with an electric guitar and marks the beginning of folk-rock. Today is the day in 1954 that Walter Payton, American Pro Football Hall of Fame running back was born. Walter said “If I’m going to get hit, why let the guy who’s going to hit me get the easiest and best shot? I explode into the guy who’s trying to tackle me..” This is also the day in 1997 Ben Hogan, American golfer (9-time major title winner; US masters 1951, 53), dies of a stroke at 84. Ben said, “I couldn’t wait for the sun to come up the next morning so that I could get out on the course again.” Both Walter and Ben loved what they did. Lucky people. Now, be smart, be safe and wear the mask. Abide.
