We have entered the time/space of July 16, 2020. It will be a sunshine day in Florida. No storms brewing in the Atlantic. Those are the good. I won’t go through the bad. You already know. Despite the chaos, I’ll use my tread mill and my total vibration machine, which really does work, to break up my day and read, watch and listen and cook. I am firmly in a rut but there’s not much choice. It would be nice to find something to celebrate. The choices today are Guinea Pig Appreciation Day, National Corn Fritter Day, National Fresh Spinach Day, World Snake Day, National Personal Chef Day and National Stress Awareness Day. I’ll go with the spinach since we have a bag in the fridge and a salad for lunch sounds good. On this day in 1439 the act of kissing is banned in England to stop the Black Death from spreading. In 1618 on this day, Captain John Gilbert patents the 1st dredger in Britain. On this day in 1935 the first automatic parking meter in the United States is installed in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. This is the day in 1969 that the Apollo 11 is launched which carries the 1st men to land on Moon. Today is Orville Redenbacher’s birthday (1907). He said, “Every once in a while, someone will mail me a single popcorn kernel that didn’t pop. I’ll get out a fresh kernel, tape it to a piece of paper and mail it back to them.” This is also the day in 2017 George A. Romero, American Canadian filmmaker “Father of the Zombie Film” (Night of the Living Dead), dies at 77. He said, “My stories are about humans and how they react, or fail to react, or react stupidly. I’m pointing the finger at us, not at the zombies. I try to respect and sympathize with the zombies as much as possible.” You might want to watch one of Romero’s films tonight just as a change of pace. Night of the living dead is a favorite of mine. Be safe, wear the damn mask and Abide.
