We’ve moved one notch on the celestial time piece and are now in July 14 2020. Pretty much the same as the 13th and probably the 15th. There are no storms brewing in the Atlantic, it will be in the 90s today with showers in the afternoon. In other words, just another summer day in the South. I’m thankful for air conditioning. Now lets see what we have to celebrate today. It’s National Grand Marnier Day, Pandemonium Day, National Mac And Cheese Day, National Tape Measure Day and Shark Awareness Day. I’ll go with the Mac and Cheese. Now to the history of today. This is the day in 1789 that the French Revolution begins with the fall of the Bastille Prison which is celebrated as Bastille Day. On this day in 1798 the US Sedition Act becomes law and it prohibits “false, scandalous & malicious” writing against government. On this day in 1850 the 1st public demonstration of ice made by refrigeration is made by Florida physician John Gorrie. Finally, this is the day in 1940 that due baseball’s “beanball wars”, Spalding starts selling batting helmet with earflaps. This is President Gerald R. Ford’s birthday (1913). He said, “I know I am getting better at golf because I am hitting fewer spectators.” This is also the day in 1965 That former Governor of Illinois and Candidate for President, Adlai Stevenson II, dies at 65. He said, “Nixon is the kind of politician who would cut down a redwood tree, then mount the stump for a speech on conservation.” He also said, “In America any boy may become President, and I suppose it’s just one of the risks he takes.” He was sharp but he didn’t win. So that’s enough for today. Stay safe out there. Abide.
