What can I say about June 9th, 2020? It seems like just another day. Probably a testament to our resiliency. We’ve got a pandemic, protests in most major cities and are in a deep recession and we’ve become used to it. If nothing else, humans are adaptable. That could be due to our short attention span. I will do my best to make today as special as possible. It’s Donald Duck Day, Call Your Doctor Day, National Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie Day (yum) and National Earl Day which is named for Earl Baltes who built a race track in Ohio. Why Earl gets his own day is beyond my knowledge. I’ll go with the pie. It just so happens that on this day in the year 68 that the Roman Emperor Nero commits suicide to evade a Senate-imposed sentence of death by flogging. Wow. Death by flogging? If you read about him, he probably deserved it. This is the day in 1822 that Charles Graham patents porcelain false teeth. In 1860 on this day the 1st US “dime novel” is published: “Malaseka, The Indian Wife of the White Hunter,” by Mrs Ann Stevens. Finally, in 1869 Charles E. Hires sells his 1st root beer, in Philadelphia. Today is the birthday of actor Michael J. Fox who said, “One’s dignity may be assaulted, vandalized and cruelly mocked, but cannot be taken away unless it is surrendered.” This is the day in 1927 that Victoria Woodhull, American civil rights activist and presidential candidate dies at 88. She said, “It makes no difference who or what you are, old or young, black or white, pagan, Jew, or Christian, I want to love you all and be loved by you all, and I mean to have your love.” She’d get my vote but I’ve seen her picture. That’s it for today. Make it as special as you can. Abide
