It’s a new day. It’s May 4th, 2020. Never been here before. Once done, it’s gone forever. It’s yours to make into something special or just let it slip away. I know it’s hard when you’re social distancing to make a day special. It’s still possible, just harder. I don’t have a plan. Maybe there’s an event? It’s Anti-Bullying Day which means be nice on Facebook. It’s also Bird Day, International Firefighters Day, International Respect for Chickens Day, National Orange Juice Day (I like mine with vodka), World Give Day and Star Wars Day. Now to the history of this date. In 1535 Five Carthusian monks were hung, drawn and quartered in London, for refusing to acknowledge Henry VIII as head of the Church of England. My guess is that the remaining monks quickly decided to acknowledged Henry. In 1893 Cowboy Bill Pickett invents bulldogging, the skill of grabbing cattle by the horns and wrestling them to the ground. Growing up around cattle as I did, I never remember wanting to do that. Finally, in 1953 son this day, a Pulitzer Prize for Literature is awarded to Ernest Hemingway for “The Old Man & The Sea”. Ernest said, “If something is wrong, fix it if you can. But train yourself not to worry: Worry never fixes anything.” This is the birthday (1796) of Horace Mann who was an educator, author and editor who pioneered public schools in America. He said, “Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity.” This is the day that Moe Howard (three stooges) stopped living in 1975. Moe said, “Only fools are positive”. He has a point. That’s all folks. The orange juice and vodka sound good for 5 pm. Until then, Abide.
