May 1st is here and April 2020 is no more. This is May Day which is a pretty big deal where I grew up. We had a big parade, a carnival, big dance. I was lucky to grow up in the place known as McPherson Kansas. Didn’t realize it at the time. We’ve got a big list today: Couple Appreciation Day, International Workers’ Day, International Lover’s Day, Loyalty Day, Lei Day, National Chocolate Parfait Day, and No Pants Day. There’s more but this is enough for me. Going with no pants today. Social isolation only requires boxer shorts. No to the historical footnotes. In 1776 Adam Weishaupt founds the secret society of Illuminati with the goals of opposing superstition, and religious influence over public life, and abuses of state power. This is real cloak and dagger stuff. On this day in 1873 the 1st US postal card is issued. This day in 1901 saw Chicago White Sox outfielder Herm McFarland hits first grand slam in American League history in 19-9 win at home against Detroit; Tigers commit 12 errors. Finally, on this day in 1939 Batman first appears in Detective Comics #27. This is the birthday (1852) of Calamity Jane [Martha Jane Canary]. She said, ” I was molested very little, … they knew that I never missed my mark.” This is the day in 1700 that John Dryden, English poet and playwright dies at the age of 68. He said “We first make our habits, and then our habits make us.” Yes John, we are what we do. And another post comes to an end. Ya’ll Abide now.
