We are now in the time/space of April 16, 2020. I woke up yesterday being apprehensive about the future, which I still am, but a friend politely reminded me that it’s better to look on the positive aspects of today. He’s right of course. Since happiness begins with gratitude, I am especially grateful to the people who are risking their own health to provide us the basic services we need. Today I will raise my glass and toast them. I can also celebrate Day Of The Mushroom, National Ask An Atheist Day, National Eggs Benedict Day, National Orchid Day, Save The Elephant Day and National Wear Your Pajamas to Work Day. It’s also National High Five Day but we don’t do that anymore. Now let’s browse the history of this day. In 1862 the American Confederate Congress approves conscription act for all white males between 18 and 35 which requires them to serve 3 years in the Confederate Army. This is the date in 1881 In Dodge City, Kansas, that Bat Masterson fights his last gun battle. He was a gambler, a buffalo hunter, journalist, gun fighter and law man. He said, ” Shoot first and never miss”. In 1929, the NY Yankees becomes the 1st team to wear uniforms with numbers. Finally, in 1962 Walter Cronkite begins anchoring CBS Evening News. He said, “And that’s the way it is”. Today is Charlie Chaplin’s birthday (1889). Charlie said, “A man’s true character comes out when he’s drunk.” That could be true. This is the day in 1859 that the French historian Alexis de Tocqueville passed at the age of 54. He said, “In politics shared hatreds are almost always the basis of friendships.” That explains the polarization we now enjoy. Tocqueville’s views of America are interesting. We’ve come to the end of another post. Hope you enjoyed it. I did. Be safe. Abide.
