Easter has quietly moved from the present to the past. It was our first Easter with just the two of us. No family or friends. Different. No large rabbit with chocolate eggs. There was rum however so I can’t really complain. Next year will be better. Now it’s April 13th and that means it is Dyngus Day which is celebrated with parades and parties in Polish communities. It’s also Scrabble Day, National Peach Cobbler Day, National Make Lunch Count Day and Thomas Jefferson Day. If I was back in Michigan, I’d celebrate Dyngus Day with my Polish friends. Now to the history section of this post: In 1668 John Dryden is appointed first English poet laureate by Charles II. I only bring this up to give you one quote from John, “We first make our habits, and then our habits make us.” In 1796 the first elephant arrives in US from India. On this day in 1911 The US House of Representatives votes to institute direct elections of senators to Congress. In 1934 in the depths of the depression 4.7 million US families were reported receiving welfare payments. It will be more this time. Since this is Thomas Jefferson’s birthday, here’s a quote from him, “In matters of style, swim with the current; in matters of principle, stand like a rock.” Since Jefferson has so many great quotes, I’ll end this post with another one, “I never considered a difference of opinion in politics, in religion, in philosophy, as cause for withdrawing from a friend.” Particularity good advice today. Stay safe today. That’s all you have to do. Tomorrow isn’t here yet. Be sure to Abide.
