We are now in April 5th, 2020. The virus is forcing me into a rut, a daily routine, predictability. One of my goals in writing this post was to avoid that. Now it’s virtually impossible to do something different every day. No point in whining. Everyone with half a brain is in the same place. Maybe it’s time to start a daily meeting with friends on Zoom? Today is First Contact Day, Bell Bottoms Day, National Dandelion day, Deep Dish Pizza Day, Palm Sunday and National Raisin and Spice Bar Day. Since my two favorite good groups are chocolate and pizza, I’ll go with the pizza. Now let’s talk history: On this day in 1792 George Washington casts the 1st presidential veto. There was a bill to add seats to the Northern States representation. George vetoed the bill because he could see where this would end up and he and Franklin came up a rule of 1 representative for ever 33,000 citizens. In 1923 the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company starts producing inflatable tires. In 1954 Elvis Presley records his debut single “That’s All Right”. Finally, on this day in 1969 there were massive anti-Vietnam War demonstrations all across America. I didn’t participate because I was in Vietnam at the time. This is the birthday (1588) of the English philosopher Thomas Hobbes who said, “It is not wisdom but Authority that makes a law.” You have to think about that quote for a while before you understand what he means. This is the date in 1976 that Howard Hughes died at the age of 72. He was one of the richest men in the world. He said, “Money can’t buy happiness”. He should know. That’s it for today. Stay safe, wash those hands and wear a mask outside. Abide.
