There’s a phrase I like to use to indicate that we’re headed into difficult times. It’s “Buckle up buttercup, going to be a wild ride”. When we get through this pandemic, we’re going to be in a different reality and it may take us a few years to get to the new normal. We will. This has happened before. That is the future and I’m going to focus on today. It’s Jewel Day, Blame Some Else Day, Donald Duck Day, National Coconut Torte Day and Skeptics Day International. I’m a skeptic. Always have been and I don’t consider that part of my character to be a flaw. I’ll pick that but the coconut torte does sound interesting. In 1781 William Herschel sees what he thinks is a “comet” but is actually the discovery of the planet Uranus and in so doing, establishes a new category of celestial jokes. In 1900 In France the length of the working day for women and children is limited by law to 11 hours. Think about that for a little while. Finally, in 1943 on this date the Nazis liquidate the Jewish ghetto in Kraków. Oskar Schindler (Schindler’s List), with advance information, saves his workers by keeping them in his factory overnight. This is the day in 1906 that Susan B. Anthony died at the age of 86 from pneumonia. She said, “I distrust those people who know so well what God wants them to do, because I notice it always coincides with their own desires.” She has lots of good quotes. I particularly like that one. That’s enough for March 13, 2020. Despite the coming disruptions and the small changes required, I’m going to work at being happy. Hope you do too. Wash those hands and Abide.
