We’ve reached the space/time of the first day of February, 2020. I predict a good month. That’s my expectation. The Commission has given us a long list of things to celebrate today: Change Your Password Day, Decorate With Candy Day, Dark Chocolate Day (yum), G.I. Joe Day, Ice Cream For Breakfast Day, Baked Alaska Day, International Pisco Sour Day, Robinson Crusoe Day and Spunky Old Broads Day. I like ice cream and dark chocolate but I’m going to go with spunky old broads because I happen to really like them and I know a lot of them. I’ll start today’s history lesson with the French King Louis XIV who on this date in 1669 limits freedom of religion. As a result 200,000 Huguenots (protestants) left France causing serious economic problems. As a side note, Louis XIV ruled for 72 years. In 1790 on this date the US Supreme Court convenes for 1st time in New York City. In 1862 Julia Howe publishes “Battle Hymn of Republic”. In 1867, bricklayers start working 8-hour days. In 1893 Thomas Edison completes worlds 1st movie studio at West Orange, New Jersey. In 1920 the 1st commercial armored car introduced in St Paul, Minn. Finally, in 1953 “You Are There” with Walter Cronkite premieres on CBS television. He said, “And that’s the way it is”. It’s Clark Gable’s birthday (1901). He said, “I’m just a lucky slob from Ohio who happened to be in the right place at the right time.” I’m sure his success was all luck but luck always has something to do with it. This is also the date in 1851 that Mary Shelley who wrote Frankenstein, dies at 53. That’s it for this post. Now I’m off to help the Parrot Heads win the People’s Choice award at the annual chili cook off for the 8th time. It’s a fitting way to start the month of February 2020.
