We’ve reached day number 6 in 2020. I look forward each morning to lifting up the lid on each day and looking though what’s in the box. Since I’ve been doing this post for over a year, I’ve been here before. My memory isn’t great, so each day feels new. Let’s see what’s in today: It’s Apple Tree Day, Bean Day, Cuddle Up Day, National Shortbread Day, National Take a Poet to Lunch Day, National Take Down the Christmas Tree Day and National Weigh-In Day. Now to the historical events which happened on January 6: In 1649 the English Parliament votes to put Charles I on trial for treason and other “high crimes”. Impeachment comes from English law. 1929 Mother Teresa arrives in Calcutta to begin her work among India’s poorest people. She said, “If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one.” In 1964 on this date the Rolling Stones’ start their 1st tour as headline act. In 1968 the Beatles’ “Magical Mystery Tour” album goes to number 1 and stays on top for 8 weeks. In 1975 “Wheel Of Fortune” debuts on NBC-TV. This happens to be the birthday (1882) of Sam Rayburn who was a Senator. He said: “Always tell the truth. Then you’ll never have to remember what you said the last time”. This is also the date in 1919 President Theodore Roosevelt died at the age of 60. His most repeated quote is “Speak softly and carry a big stick”. I also like “Old age is like everything else. To make a success of it, you’ve got to start young.” That’s a pretty good sample of what’s in the box for today. There’s a reason why it’s called the present. Now it’s time to start this wonderful day. Abide
